Academy started in 1938 as the Academy Tire Shop in San Antonio, Texas, founded by Max Gochman. His son Arthur later grew it into a sporting goods chain. The Gochman family owned it for 74 years until KKR bought the company in 2011. Academy went public on NASDAQ in October 2020 and joined the Fortune 500 the next year. It now has about 22,000 employees and made $6.4 billion in revenue in 2023. One family ran it as a tire shop for 74 years before it became a public company on Wall Street.1
