Adams Outdoor was founded in 1983, when it acquired Central Outdoor Advertising in Michigan. Stephen Adams was chairman and controlling shareholder until he died in March 2024. By the early 2020s, it had grown into the 4th largest outdoor advertising company in the US, behind Clear Channel Outdoor, Lamar Advertising and Outfront Media. That means one family built one of the biggest billboard networks in the country.
