Joe Albertson founded the company on July 21, 1939, in Boise, Idaho. Albertsons went public in June 2020 and trades on the NYSE under the ticker ACI. The investment firm Cerberus Capital Management owns about 26 percent of the company. As of 2020 Albertsons employed about 325,000 people, making it one of the largest employers in US grocery retail.
