Business insurance covers commercial auto, workers' compensation and commercial umbrella coverage.

Vern V. Moulton and four associates established the company on July 1, 1916 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, and it relocated to Lansing, Michigan in 1917, where it remains headquartered today. It is a mutual insurance company, owned by its policyholders rather than external shareholders, and it employed 5,394 people as of 2019 across 6,299 agencies in 26 states.
