Peter Munk founded the company in 1983, initially as a privately held oil and gas business before it pivoted to gold mining. It is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and employs approximately 26,800 people directly plus another 27,000 contractors. In 2024 it produced 3.91 million ounces of gold and 195,000 tonnes of copper, with reserves of 89 million ounces of gold and 18 million tonnes of copper.1
