Berlin Packaging designs and distributes rigid packaging, including plastic, glass and metal bottles, jars, cans, pails and drums, for industries such as beverage, food, personal care and pharmaceuticals. Andrew T. Berlin and his father founded the company in 1988. It operates more than 130 sales offices and warehouses around the world.
Oak Hill Capital Partners bought a majority stake in the company in 2014 for $1.43 billion. Berlin Packaging has completed more than 50 acquisitions since 2000, so growth here has come largely through buying up other packaging distributors rather than only opening new branches. That pattern is common at private-equity-backed distributors and means the company someone joins today is often built from many merged businesses.1
