General information

BlackBerry operates two divisions focused on security and critical communications and embedded systems, based in Waterloo, Canada. Products include end-to-end encrypted communications, zero-trust identity control solutions, and the QNX real-time operating system for embedded systems. QNX software runs in more than 275 million vehicles worldwide.

BlackBerry began as Research In Motion (RIM), a Canadian company that launched its first device, a two-way pager, in 1999. RIM later renamed itself BlackBerry Limited. Its phones pioneered QWERTY keyboards and push email, and the company had 85 million subscribers at its peak in September 2011. In 2016, BlackBerry announced it would stop designing its own devices and license the brand instead. That matters: BlackBerry moved from making phones to selling security and embedded software, which is why it now builds systems like QNX instead of phones.

Currently, there's a total of 32 job openings at BlackBerry. Over the last 30 days, 27 jobs were added and 48 were removed (job postings usually stay up ~27 days before being removed). Historically, the median salary is ~$129,937. BlackBerry is a top-tier H-1B sponsor.1
