BNSF was created on September 22, 1995, as a holding company that merged the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway with the Burlington Northern Railroad. It has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway since Berkshire acquired full ownership in February 2010 for $44 billion. The railroad employs approximately 36,000 workers, runs 33,400 miles of track across 28 states, and operates more than 8,000 locomotives.
