BNSF was created on September 22, 1995, as a holding company that merged the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway with the Burlington Northern Railroad. It has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway since Berkshire acquired full ownership in February 2010 for $44 billion. The railroad employs approximately 36,000 workers, runs 33,400 miles of track across 28 states, and operates more than 8,000 locomotives. That scale means BNSF runs with the backing of Berkshire Hathaway's much larger balance sheet. BNSF Railway is an H-1B sponsor.1
