Boom Supersonic builds supersonic aircraft for commercial airlines. Its Overture is a planned 60 to 80 seat airliner designed to fly at Mach 1.7. The XB-1 was a test plane that broke the sound barrier in January 2025, the first privately funded aircraft to do so. Boom also builds the Symphony engine, a custom propulsion system for the Overture. The company is based in Centennial, United States.
Blake Scholl, Joe Wilding and Josh Krall started Boom in Denver in 2014. The company went through Y Combinator's startup program in 2016. Boom is privately held and has raised over $600 million as of 2025. It employs about 150 people. That means Boom broke the sound barrier before it ever sold a plane.
