General information

Boston Dynamics is probably the world's most famous robot maker. You've likely seen their videos already: robots that run, jump and dance. Their robot dog Spot checks factories, construction sites and power plants. Stretch unloads trucks in warehouses. Atlas is their human-shaped robot, built for car factories. The company started at MIT in 1992 and spent almost 30 years as a research lab. It didn't sell its first commercial robot until 2020.

Since 2021 it's been owned by Hyundai Motor Group, the Korean car maker. That matters more than it sounds: Hyundai uses the robots in its own factories and pays for new development. The money comes from selling robots and service plans to large industrial customers. And the humanoid race is real. Boston Dynamics, Tesla and Figure are all trying to put human-shaped robots to work, mostly in car plants for now. About 1,000 people work there, most of them engineers, at the home base in Waltham, Massachusetts, plus small teams in Germany and Austria.1
