Careem was founded in 2012 by Mudassir Sheikha, Magnus Olsson and Abdulla Elyas. Ownership today is split: e& holds 50.03% of the super-app business, Uber owns the ride-hailing division, and the co-founders keep minority stakes. The company operates in more than 70 cities across 10 countries in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, and employed about 1,730 staff before a large reduction in 2020.
