Carlsberg was founded in 1847 by J.C. Jacobsen, a philanthropist and admirer of science. The company is publicly traded on Nasdaq Copenhagen under the tickers CARL A and CARL B. Since 1887, its majority owner has been the Carlsberg Foundation, a non-profit organization. So most of Carlsberg's shares sit with a charity, not with ordinary investors.1
