General information

CarMax is a used car retailer based in Richmond, Virginia. It sells vehicles through stores that typically stock 300 to 400 cars and turn over that inventory eight to ten times a year. Every car goes through a 125-point inspection and comes with a 30-day warranty and a 10-day money-back guarantee. As of January 2025, CarMax operates 253 locations across 41 states.

CarMax started in September 1993 as a subsidiary of Circuit City Corporation. It has grown into a large employer, with about 27,000 employees and over 750,000 vehicles sold in fiscal year 2021 alone.
