Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) provides emergency, urgent, and specialty medical care for children. It was the first hospital in the United States built just for children's healthcare. CHOP is based in Philadelphia, United States.
CHOP was founded in 1855 by Dr. Francis West Lewis, Dr. T. Hewson Bache, and Dr. R. A. F. Penrose Sr. It opened with 12 beds on Blight Street and moved to its current West Philadelphia campus, next to the University of Pennsylvania, in 1974. In 1962 it opened the nation's first neonatal intensive care unit, and in 1967 the first pediatric intensive care unit in the US. Today it has 692 beds and recorded 1.63 million outpatient visits and 34,829 admissions in fiscal year 2024. That matters: intensive-care units it pioneered decades ago are now standard in hospitals nationwide.
