Cloudera was founded in 2008 in Burlingame, California, by Christophe Bisciglia, Amr Awadallah, Jeff Hammerbacher, and Mike Olson. It went public on April 28, 2017, and merged with Hortonworks in January 2019. In October 2021, Cloudera was bought for about $5.3 billion and became a private company again. It is now owned by KKR and Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. That matters: private owners can invest for the long term without quarterly earnings pressure.
