CoreCivic is based in Nashville, Tennessee. It runs prisons, jails and detention centers for federal, state and local governments across the United States. Its CoreCivic Residential division manages correctional, detention and reentry facilities. CoreCivic Services provides support like transportation, pharmacy services, electronic monitoring and case management for the corrections industry.

The company was set up on January 28, 1983, in Nashville. It grew out of a crisis in Tennessee prisons, after a federal judge ruled that state prisons were unfit for people to live in. CoreCivic is a public company; its largest shareholders include BlackRock and Vanguard. It runs 82 facilities across the US, with $2.2 billion in revenue in 2025. That means people held in its facilities are under contracts with government agencies, not run directly by the government itself. Historically, the median salary is ~$107,000.1
