Ken Bretschneider founded the company in 2003 in Lehi, Utah, where it is still based. DigiCert is privately held. Since 2019, Clearlake Capital Group and TA Associates have owned it as equal partners. The company grew partly through deals, including buying Symantec's SSL/TLS certificate business for about $1 billion in 2017. It now employs over 2,000 people across 12 locations worldwide.
