Ram Palaniappan started the company in 2013 under the name ActiveHours, and it launched its app in May 2014. Earnin remains privately held. It has raised $164 million across two rounds, including from Andreessen Horowitz. As of 2021 it employed over 200 people, based in Palo Alto, California.
