General information

Fannie Mae buys mortgage loans from banks and other lenders. It packages the loans into mortgage-backed securities, called MBS, and sells them to investors. This process helps keep money available for home loans across the country. The company is based in Washington, United States.

Fannie Mae was created in 1938, as part of President Roosevelt's New Deal. It is a government-sponsored enterprise. The Federal Housing Finance Agency has run it under conservatorship since September 2008. As of 2025, it holds $4.317 trillion in total assets, earns $28.964 billion a year, and employs about 7,000 people. The government still controls one of the biggest players in the US mortgage market.

Currently, there's a total of 59 job openings at Fannie Mae. Over the last 30 days, 84 jobs were added and 28 were removed (job postings usually stay up ~12 days before being removed). Historically, the median salary is ~$142,000. Fannie Mae is a top-tier H-1B sponsor.1
