Freddie Mac buys home loans from banks and other lenders in the United States and packages them into securities sold in global capital markets. It offers a mortgage lookup tool to find who owns a loan, a rental property lookup service for renters, and the My Home platform with resources for buying, owning and renting a home. CreditSmart provides financial education for homeownership. Freddie Mac is based in McLean, United States.

Congress created Freddie Mac in 1970 to support the U.S. housing finance system. It has been a government-sponsored enterprise under Federal Housing Finance Agency conservatorship since 2008, meaning the government oversees it rather than private shareholders. As of Q2 2026, it had provided $128 billion in liquidity to the market and financed 439,000 homes.
