Five MIT scientists, Tom Knight, Jason Kelly, Reshma Shetty, Barry Canton, and Austin Che, founded Ginkgo Bioworks in 2008. The company went public on the NYSE under the ticker DNA through a SPAC merger on September 17, 2021. It grew from a small group of scientists into a public company that serves more than 130 customers, so people who join work alongside both lab scientists and software engineers.
