GitLab is a software forge that works as a DevOps platform for software teams. It gives users tools for version control and repository management, so teams can store and track changes to their code in one place. The company is based in San Francisco, United States.

GitLab started in 2011 as a side project. Its founder, Ukrainian programmer Dmytro Zaporozhets, built it using Ruby on Rails. What began as a personal side project grew into a platform used by software teams to manage their code.
