Graphcore was founded in 2016 in Bristol by Nigel Toon and Simon Knowles. It hit a $1.7 billion valuation in 2018, then in 2024 SoftBank agreed to buy it for about $500 million, and it is now a wholly owned subsidiary of SoftBank. In 2022 Graphcore made $2.7 million in revenue and lost $205 million; it had 450 employees in 2024. That matters: SoftBank's money keeps Graphcore's chip development going even though the business itself is far from profitable.
