David Gundlach and Andrew Bowen founded Hastings Direct in 1997. Insurance Australia Group bought it in 2006. A management buyout followed in 2009, then an IPO in 2015. In November 2020, a consortium of Rand Merchant International and Sampo Group took the company private again, paying £1.7 billion. Four ownership changes since founding show how much money is riding on UK car and home insurance.
