Helion Energy was founded in 2013 by David Kirtley, John Slough, Chris Pihl, and George Votroubek. It is a private company that joined the Y Combinator program in 2015. By 2021, Helion reached 100 million degrees Celsius with its Trenta prototype. Helion has a deal to supply Microsoft with 50 MWe of power starting in 2028, and it is working with Nucor on a 500-MWe fusion plant targeting 2030. About 500 employees work at Helion.
