General information

Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or HHMI, is a nonprofit organization that funds and conducts medical research. It is one of the largest private funders of biological and medical research in the country. Rather than selling products, HHMI supports scientists and research programs. The institute is based in Chevy Chase, in the United States.

HHMI was established in 1953, first based in Miami, Florida. It was founded by Howard Hughes, the businessman and aviation pioneer; after his death in 1976, courts appointed new trustees to oversee it. As of 2022, the institute employed about 2,300 people and held a $24 billion endowment, making it the second-wealthiest philanthropic organization in the United States. That endowment means HHMI can fund long-term research without depending on outside donors year to year.

Currently, there's a total of 45 job openings at Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Over the last 30 days, 22 jobs were added and 9 were removed (job postings usually stay up ~68 days before being removed). Historically, the median salary is ~$80,970. Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a top-tier H-1B sponsor.1
