Its brands include the magazines Bunte, Focus, Superillu and Freizeit Revue, the tech magazine Chip, and the digital platforms XING and HolidayCheck. Focus Online is one of the most-read German-language websites.
Franz Burda Sr. founded the company in Philippsburg in 1903. After World War II his wife Aenne Burda built up the fashion publishing side. The company stayed private. In 1986 the group was split between Franz Jr., Frieder and Hubert Burda, and Hubert Burda became the main shareholder and publisher. By 2023 the company had about 10,000 employees and €2.748 billion in revenue. It is still family-owned, not traded on the stock market, even at that size.
