IMAX designs camera systems, film formats, and projection technology for movie theaters. IMAX Digital, introduced in 2008, brought digital projection to standard multiplex theaters. IMAX with Laser, launched in 2014, added 4K laser projection for sharper images. Its customers are cinema chains around the world. The company is based in New York, United States.

IMAX was founded in 1967 by Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, Robert Kerr, and William C. Shaw. Its first permanent theater opened in 1971 at Ontario Place's Cinesphere in Toronto. From one screen in Canada, IMAX grew into a format now used in multiplexes worldwide. IMAX is an H-1B sponsor.1
