L.L.Bean sells clothing and outdoor gear. It makes clothes for men, women and kids, plus footwear like boots, shoes and slippers. It also sells outdoor equipment such as tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, kayaks and canoes. Its best-known product is the Bean Boot, also called the Maine Hunting Shoe, which has been a signature item since the company began. L.L.Bean is based in Freeport, Maine.

L.L.Bean started in 1912, when Leon Leonwood Bean opened his first store in Freeport. The company is still privately owned by his family. Shawn Gorman, his great-grandson, is now the chairman.
