The platform also includes networking and messaging tools so members can connect directly with each other. LinkedIn is based in Sunnyvale, California.
LinkedIn was founded in December 2002 by Reid Hoffman and colleagues from PayPal and Socialnet.com. Microsoft bought the company in December 2016 for $26.2 billion, its largest acquisition at that time. LinkedIn now has more than 1 billion registered members in over 200 countries and employed about 18,500 people as of February 2024. It reported revenue of $17.8 billion in 2025, and being owned by Microsoft gives it extra resources and reach.
