Louisiana State University is a public land-grant research university. It runs eight campuses and offers more than 70 master's and 50 doctoral degree programs. It reported $488 million in research activity. LSU is based in Baton Rouge, US.
The Louisiana General Assembly founded LSU on January 2, 1860, with William Tecumseh Sherman as its first superintendent. The school closed during the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, then reopened in Baton Rouge in 1869. Its current campus was dedicated in 1926. LSU admitted its first female student in 1905 and its first Black undergraduate in 1953. It now has about 1,500 faculty and 5,000 administrative staff, and enrolled 42,016 students in Fall 2024. That matters: LSU's history of opening access, from women in 1905 to Black students in 1953, shaped the public university it is today.
