M-Pesa
11 open jobsGeneral information
M-Pesa is a mobile phone-based money transfer service, payment and micro-financing service that operates as a branchless banking system. Users deposit and withdraw money, transfer it to other users, and pay bills and buy airtime through their phones. In some markets, users can also get loans and link their accounts to a bank.
Safaricom, Kenya's largest mobile network operator, owns M-Pesa, with Vodafone holding a minority 40% stake as a co-founder. By 2012 M-Pesa had 17 million accounts in Kenya, and by 2013 it had 5 million in Tanzania, tying the service to one of the region's biggest carriers rather than a standalone startup.1
