General information

MEMX runs a technology-driven stock exchange built to compete with NYSE and Nasdaq and increase competition in trading. It handles US stock trading, and since September 2023, options trading too. The exchange launched officially on September 21, 2020, after SEC approval that May. MEMX is based in New York City.

MEMX was founded in early 2019 by a consortium of nine firms, BofA Securities, Charles Schwab, Citadel, E-Trade, Fidelity, Morgan Stanley, TD Ameritrade, UBS, and Virtu Financial. That ownership matters: the same firms that trade heavily built the exchange, with the explicit goal of increasing competition among exchanges. MEMX is an H-1B sponsor.1
