Merck KGaA

Merck KGaA is a German science and technology company working in chemicals and pharmaceuticals. It makes liquid crystals, life science and performance chemicals, and bioprocessing solutions for industrial and lab customers. Its drug Erbitux treats certain cancers. The company is based in Darmstadt, Germany.

Friedrich Jacob Merck founded the company in 1668, when he took over the Angel Pharmacy in Darmstadt. Merck trades publicly on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, but the Merck family still holds 70.3% of it through E. Merck KG. The company bought Sigma-Aldrich for $17 billion in 2014 and Serono for $13.2 billion in 2006. It now has about 62,461 employees and made €21.10 billion in revenue in 2025. Few companies stay in the same family for as long as Merck has.
