Mistral AI was founded on April 28, 2023, by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix. It raised €105 million in June 2023, €385 million in December 2023, and €600 million in June 2024. It stayed private through 2025, when chipmaker ASML bought an 11% stake at a €12 billion valuation. Staff grew from 100 people in September 2024 to more than 1,000 by 2026. That matters: ASML's money and the fast funding rounds let Mistral compete with much bigger AI companies.
