Netscape Communications started Mozilla as an open-source project in 1998, after announcing in January that its browser would be free and open source. The Mozilla Foundation became its legal steward in July 2003. Mozilla is a non-profit foundation with a for-profit subsidiary, Mozilla Corporation. It had about 1,000 employees before cutting 25% of its staff, around 250 people, in 2020. That matters: the non-profit structure means Mozilla answers to its mission rather than shareholders, but it still had to cut jobs when money got tight.
