Navistar Defense was established in 2003 as a freestanding division within Navistar International. Navistar International became an independent subsidiary of Traton, the truck maker owned by Volkswagen, in July 2021. Navistar International employs about 14,500 people worldwide. That means the trucks a soldier rides in and the trucks hauling freight on the highway can trace back to the same corporate parent, now owned by a German carmaker.
