Principal Financial Group is an American financial and insurance company. It manages retirement plans, insurance and investments for individuals and businesses. Its 401(k) plans help employees save for retirement, and its annuities give retirees guaranteed income. It also sells IRAs and disability and critical illness insurance. The company is based in Des Moines, United States.

Principal was founded in 1879 as Bankers Life Insurance Company in Des Moines. Three local bankers started it: Edward Temple, Simon Casady, and Phineas M. Casady. Today it trades publicly on Nasdaq as PFG and is part of the S&P 500. At the end of 2025 it had about 19,700 employees, with roughly 9,000 in Des Moines. It made $15.626 billion in revenue that year. A big, public insurance company is still run from the small city where it began. Historically, the median salary is ~$104,975.1
