General information

Rambus designs and licenses computer chip technology. Its Memory Interface Chips help move data faster between a computer's processor and memory, in DDR5 and DDR4 systems. Its Silicon IP business licenses interface designs for standards such as PCIe, CXL, HBM, GDDR, DDR, LPDDR, and MIPI, which other chipmakers build into their own products. It also sells Security IP, including encryption and anti-counterfeiting technology to protect chips. Rambus is based in San Jose, in the United States.

Rambus was founded in March 1990 by engineers Mike Farmwald and Mark Horowitz. It trades on NASDAQ under the ticker RMBS and sits in the S&P 400 index. As of 2023 it had 623 employees and $461 million in revenue, a small team whose designs end up inside many other companies' chips.
