Frank Russell founded the company in 1936 in Tacoma, Washington, as a stockbroker. It has had several owners since, including Northwestern Mutual, the London Stock Exchange Group, and TA Associates. In July 2026, a group including B Capital Group and CalPERS agreed to buy the firm for about $2.8 billion. Russell manages $418 billion in assets and advises on $2.6 trillion more, across 32 countries, with about 1,350 employees.
