Its website builder lets merchants set up a store; Shop Pay handles checkout and payments; and its point-of-sale system connects online and in-person sales. It also offers inventory, shipping and marketing automation tools for daily operations. Shopify is based in Ottawa, Canada.
Shopify was founded in 2006 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake, and went public in 2015. It now serves over 5 million customers and has processed more than $1 trillion in sales through its platform. That scale matters for engineers: changes here touch a large share of online retail. It employed 7,600 staff in 2025. Shopify is a top-tier H-1B sponsor.1
