Spectris was founded in 1915 as the Fairey Aviation Company by Richard Fairey, which first made seaplanes. After a management buyout in 1987, it listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1988. In 2011, it bought Omega Engineering for $475 million. In December 2025, KKR & Co. bought Spectris for £4.7 billion, taking it private. The company had 7,600 employees in 2025. A firm that began by building seaplanes now makes tools that measure and test other companies' products.1
