General information

Substack is a publishing platform that lets writers create and earn money from their own content. It hosts and distributes newsletters and manages subscriber lists. Writers can also host podcasts and video through the platform. Substack Chat and Notes let readers and writers talk and post short updates. The company is based in San Francisco.

Substack was founded in 2017 by Chris Best, Jairaj Sethi and Hamish McKenzie. By March 2025 it had reached 5 million paid subscriptions, and by October 2025 about 50,000 creators were earning money on the platform. In June 2025 it raised $100 million, valuing the company at $1.1 billion. That funding gives the company room to build tools for writers rather than chase profit right away.

Currently, there's a total of 12 job openings at Substack. Over the last 30 days, 2 jobs were added and 2 were removed (job postings usually stay up ~45 days before being removed). Historically, the median salary is ~$200,000. Substack is an H-1B sponsor.1
