The app grew out of Douyin, a similar app launched in China in 2016. The international version, called TikTok, launched in 2017. TikTok's US operations are based in Los Angeles, California.
TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a company based in Beijing. By September 2021, TikTok had passed 1 billion monthly active users around the world. In 2021, it made $4 billion from advertising.
