David Berman and Geoffrey Matus founded Tricon in Toronto in 1988. In 2017, Tricon bought Silver Bay Realty Trust for about $1.4 billion, making it the fourth-largest publicly owned single-family rental company at the time. The company grew to employ more than 1,000 people. In 2024, Blackstone bought Tricon for about $3.5 billion. That deal ended Tricon's run as a public company and put its rental homes under new ownership.
