Uniswap is a decentralized cryptocurrency exchange protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain. It lets people swap tokens with each other, using liquidity pools instead of a company order book. Anyone can trade without signing up for an account. Uniswap is based in New York, United States.
Hayden Adams, a former mechanical engineer at Siemens, created Uniswap on November 2, 2018. In 2020, it launched a governance token called UNI, given to early users. Uniswap Labs raised $165 million by 2022 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz. In 2022, token holders voted to set up the Uniswap Foundation to help run the protocol. By December 2024, it was estimated to be the largest decentralized exchange by daily trading volume. That is unusual: no single company runs it, token holders vote on its future.
