VF was founded in 1899 by John Barbey as the Reading Glove and Mitten Manufacturing Company in Reading, Pennsylvania. It went public in 1951, then grew mainly by acquiring other brands: Lee jeans in 1969, Wrangler and JanSport (via Blue Bell Inc.) for $762 million in 1986, The North Face and Vans in the 2000s, and Timberland for $2.2 billion in 2011. In 2018 VF split into two companies. It now employs 30,000 people and reported $10.45 billion in revenue in 2024.
