Visa is a payment card company that helps banks and other financial institutions move money electronically around the world. It provides credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards issued through partner banks. Its Visa payWave technology lets people pay by tapping a card instead of swiping or inserting it. It also offers mobile payment and digital payment platforms for online and app-based purchases. Visa is based in San Francisco.
Visa was founded in 1958 as BankAmericard by Bank of America, and was renamed Visa in 1976. It became a public company in 2008, through an IPO that raised $17.9 billion. In 2025, its network processed 257.5 billion transactions worth $14.2 trillion, and it employed 34,100 people. That scale makes Visa one of the largest payment networks in the world, more stable than most young companies. Historically, the median salary is ~$204,300. Visa is a top-tier H-1B sponsor.1
