Webroot was founded on July 5, 1997 in Boulder, Colorado, by Steven Thomas and Kristen Tally. It grew through acquisitions, buying Email Systems in 2007 and BrightCloud and Prevx in 2010. Carbonite acquired Webroot in 2019 for $618.5 million. Carbonite itself was later bought by OpenText, so Webroot is now part of OpenText. A small consumer antivirus startup ended up owned by a large enterprise software company.
