Zoox was founded in 2014 by Tim Kentley-Klay and Jesse Levinson. Amazon bought the company in 2020 for more than $1.2 billion, and Zoox is now a private Amazon subsidiary. It launched its first paid rides in Las Vegas in September 2025, then opened to the public in San Francisco in November 2025. The company had about 2,200 employees as of 2023.
